First in a new series of letters from places I’m not, from people I know and trust…
There’s nothing Kiev likes to tell us quite so much as how bad things supposedly are in Crimea. There was Ukraine’s new Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin, himself Russian-born, saying the other day:
“Seventy percent of people living in Crimea depend on the tourism industry. And 70 percent of all tourists who visited Crimea, came from [mainland] Ukraine,” he said. “Today, the beaches are empty…”
….. “Crimea has been and will remain Ukrainian. And we already have a vision for Crimea’s future,” he said.
I had a friend in Odessa, Dima, originally from Crimea. When the Crimea situation started, he returned there to be with his family, voted for Russia in the March 16th referendum, and is still there. I don’t think Dima’s much of a photo-taker, but here’s a picture of us out in Odessa at the end of last year (right).
The other day, Dima wrote me an email, kindly republished with his permission below -
